Canine Dermatitis – Four Types of Dog Dermatitis

Canine dermatitis is a general term for various inflammatory skin diseases. Some of these diseases only affect the shine of the dog’s coat, while others can damage his overall health. Some of the most common types of dog dermatitis include flea, atopic, contact, and moist dermatitis. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Flea

This form of dermatitis is caused by flea allergies. The dog will experience an allergic reaction if he is bitten by just a single flea. In addition to constant, severe itching, the dog may also lose his hair in the affected spots. It is also possible to develop hot spots, or areas of infection, in these areas.

Atopic

One of the next common types of canine dermatitis is atopic. This condition is brought on by an allergic reaction to various things in the dog’s environment. Most dogs suffer from atopic dermatitis because of an allergy to grass. The most common symptom is red, irritated skin due to your dog’s constant itching and scratching. Some dog’s also experience runny eyes and noses.
Contact
The next type of dog dermatitis is the contact variety, which dogs develop over time. As its name suggests, this condition is brought on by contact with various materials that the dog is allergic to. This includes substances such as fertilizer, bleach, acids, and carpet cleaner. Some dogs are even allergic to flea collars. The main symptom is red skin that itches constantly. The only part of the skin that’s affected is the part that came into contact with the offending material.

Moist

One of the final types of canine dermatitis is moist. This condition is characterized by the sudden development of raw, moist areas of skin. This type of dermatitis is most common in hot, humid weather. The raw areas of skin are caused by your dog scratching and licking constantly. This enables bacteria to invade the spot and worsen the infection.

Dog Allergies

Humans aren’t the only ones who can suffer from allergies. Allergies affect many different mammals, including dogs. Dogs have long suffered from allergies that come from many different sources. Only recently have people started doing things to help man’s best friend deal with the ravages of dog allergies. As in humans, most dog allergies are reactions to ingredients in their food. Less care is put into a typical dog food preparation than human food so many different types of fillers, fiber and protein make it into the finished dog food. While most dogs do not suffer from allergies to the food, some do and it can be just as difficult for them to deal with these allergies as it is for humans to deal with their food allergies. Another cause of dog allergies are dust mites. Dust mites are common causes of allergies in humans. Dust allergies
cause the same difficult reactions that are common in humans. This is why it’s important to keep your dog’s living area dust free. Reducing the dust level by frequent dusting and cleaning is essential.Treating dog allergies is important if you care for your dog. As in humans, allergies are uncomfortable and can make life less enjoyable. The same holds true for dogs. For example, to take care of food allergies, make sure that quality dog food is used. Observe your dog after eating. If he is showing signs of allergies then it’s recommended to try a different type of food and see if your dog’s allergy problems are reduced. Dog allergies can make life difficult for your pet. You have the power to help him overcome his negative health issues

Dog digestive problems are most often related to poor qualityfood and lack of nutrients. Graduating your dog to a better dietwill impact his health in ways that you would have neverthought.Quality Food And Healthy Dog Digestion…It’s obvious when a dog receives the necessary nutrients, vitamins and dog enzymes that it needs by his skin, coat and thelack of digestive problems.A quality all natural dog food cannedor dry, will deliver superior results to your dog’s generalhealth. If you are not feeding your dog a “premium” dog food thenchances are he is lacking in what he needs to thrive as a dog.Don’t be sold by fancy packaging, what is actually in the bag iswhat counts. Meat should be the first ingredient whether it isbeef, lamb, chicken, turkey or fish. Avoid dog foods that saymeat byproducts.Meat byproducts could be just about anything including thingsthat you would not want to hear. That is why it is veryimportant to look for the primary ingredient to say the name ofthe meat.In the past decade many private dog food companies havemade a tremendous difference in providing dogs with qualityfoods.Consumers are beginning to realize that this is money wellspent. If your dog is not receiving what his body needs, hiscoat will be dull and his skin will be flaky. He will have gasand flatulence problems daily.Unfortunately, your dog gets what you pay for when it comes tohis food and health. You can easily improve your dog’s digestion problems with a high quality food. Dog enzymes are also a veryeffective way to provide your dog with the necessary nutrientshis body needs. It is best to start with his food and if he still has gas or flatulence problems, dog enzymes will most likely be what heneeds.

Your dog’s digestive system is an impressive, powerful function of the mouth, stomach, small and large intestines, aided by the liver and pancreas.Digestion begins in the mouth, where saliva lubricates the food and passes it down the esophagus. The dog’s teeth — sharp, jagged, blade-shaped molars — are designed for gripping, tearing and shredding, and are specifically suited for its digestive capabilities. Other mammals have flat molars, characteristic of grinding. The dog’s jaws, however, are incapable of moving sideways, and instead are hinged. This allows them to open widely and ingest large chunks of meat whole.Swallowed food passes down the esophagus to the stomach. The stomach of a canine is very acidic with a pH registering as low as 1. Food is well mixed and broken down before contents leave the stomach as chyme.Chyme is the fluid that passes easily into the small intestine, where the pancreas and liver provide additional digestive enzymes. These enzymes continue protein digestion and also provide carbohydrate and fat digestion. Nutrients are absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream.By the time any food reaches the large intestine, most of the nutrients have been processed and absorbed. It is here that water and electrolytes are assimilated and bacteria can break down undigested fiber. The wastes are then excreted.Dogs have the ability to consume large quantities of food at one time and can rest between meals. In the wild, this is known as “gorging,” which is beneficial in hunting large game. Dogs, like carnivores, can devour large meals after a hunt, and, thanks to the digestive function, can then leisurely wait until the next meal opportunity arises. In addition to protein and fat, dogs also require a certain percentage of carbohydrate in their diet. But it is a delicate balance, too much protein and the result is disease, too little and the results are similar.Large amounts of vegetation, grains and fiber are difficult for dogs to process. With their short and simple digestive tracts, they are incapable of fermenting and absorbing these foods like an herbivore would. High-grain, high-fiber diets, then, only result in a much larger stool volume. The canine has a short digestive tract that helps to easily digest animal flesh and fat. The food spends a much longer time in the stomach, which produces a higher amount of hydrochloric acid, and aids in the breakdown of animal proteins, bones and fat.To keep your dog’s gastrointestinal system functioning at its finest, a healthy, well-balanced diet is of the essence. The quality of the diet can be measured in its ease of digestion. Large, malodorous stool is a reliable indicator that something is amiss in the digestive tract — and the food going into it would be the most likely perpetrator.Digestive issues are one health problem your dog need never suffer, as the solution is right at your fingertips, and completely within your discretion.

Poorva Karma (Pre care ) – prepares the body for main therapy of panchakarmaa) Paachan (Digestion) – A unique preparation of ghee is being administered, which helps in cleansing the digestive process which makes the impurities softer and lubricates the body tissues.b) Snehan ( oleation) – An oil massage is applied to the entire body, which opens the channels and moves the toxins towards the gastro intestinal tract and also makes the deep tissues softer.c) Swedan (Fomentation) – It involves heat to make the patient sweat. A herbal concoction may also be added to the steam which dilutes the toxins and increases it movement to the GI tract. After a week of above process, the doshas are expected to be ripened and now the main panchakarma treatment which suits the individual body constitution and the disorder is advised..
Panchakarma (Pradan Karma) :a) Vamana Karma – induced vomiting – Here the toxins due to the vitiated doshas are expelled out through the oral route. It purifies respiratory tract and upper part of the body.b) Virechana Karma – induced purgation – Here a proper bowel movement is brought about by flushing out the toxins which are flushed out through the anal passage. According to the ancient Ayurvedic Science, Asthma is known as “‘ Swas Roga’ “.and is characterized by the inflammation of the bronchial airways leading to increased mucus production. In the preliminary stage of asthma the patient may complain of indigestion, constipation and tightness in the chest, later it leads to sneezing, coughing and wheezing, indicating the attempt of the body to remove the congested phlegm that has blocked the respiratory passages from the nose to the lungs.
According to ayurveda, allergy is not the primary cause of the disease, the primary causes are wrong food habits, mental strain and bad weather. Allergic factors are only secondary causes which precipitate the disease.
The main Doshas (humors) involved in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma are Vata (air) and Kapha (water). The vitiated ‘Pranvayu’ combines with deranged ‘Kapha dosha’ in the lungs causing obstruction in the ‘Pranavaha srotasa’(Respiratory passage). This results in gasping and laboured breathing. This condition is known as ‘Swas Roga’ and its five types are1]Maha-shwas
2]Urdhva-shwas
3]Chinna-shwas
4]Tamak-shwas
5]Kshudra-shwasAmong these five types first three are not curable. ‘Tamak-shwas is ‘yapya’(Controllable) and is difficult to cure. The last one is curable. More than 75% of the cases belong to last two categories.
Ayurveda states that asthma is influenced by the following factorsa)Adi-bala-pravritta:- Defect in the spermatozoon or the ovum of the respective parents (Genetic inheritance)b) Dosha-bala-pravritta:- That which is originated due to improper diet, unhealthy habits, those which originates from the stomach or intestines.c) Kala-bala-pravritta:- This is a seasonal type, produced by the variation in the atmospheric temperature or humidity.d) Daiya-bala-parvritta:- This is a providential type. Brought about by malignant influence such as infection, allergens and emotional stress.e) Swabhava-bala-pravritta:- The natural type that which comes with old age. Bronchial asthma is therefore caused by genetic factor, improper digestion and diet, environmental stress in the form of allergens and weather changes.
According to ayurveda, an individual’s body is composed of seven categories of tissue elements and the functions of the entire body are regulated by three factors called vayu, pitta and kapha. These three factors taken together are called tri doshas. According to Ayurveda increased in kapha dosha in the stomach is the underlying cause of asthma Imbalance of these doshas due to various reasons such as wrong diet, regimens, medicines and psychic factors leads to diseases. In order to transport nourishment from the intestines to the tissues and the excretion of waste products from these tissues to different exterior openings such as the rectum, the urinary bladder and sweat glands, there are millions of channels. These channels are called srotas. A disease may be manifested in a particular organ of the’ body but it is not necessary for it to originate from the same organ.
Ayurveda distinctively conceives of three different parts of this pathogenic process namely
(i) the site of origin
(ii) the channel of circulation
(iii) the site of manifestation of the disease.
In the case asthma, the site of origin is the stomach and the intestines. The root cause of the disease is basically located there. The pathogenic substances for the manifestation of the diseases originate from these places. They are carried, according to ayurveda, through a group of channels called rasavaha srotas. It is the weakest point in the body which has an affinity to the type of morbidity already created in the stomach that is affected by this process. If the tissues of the lungs, musculature of the bronchial tube and the mucous membrane lining these tubes are weak, then, they get affected. Thus, according to ayurveda, the site of origin of bronchial asthma is the stomach and the intestines. The channels of circulation of the waste products of the body are rasavaha srotas, that is, channels carrying plasma, and the site of manifestation of the disease are the lungs. In a nutshell Due to increased Kaph dosha, Strotorodh in Pranvaha Strotas (blockage in the respiratory systems), natural direction of the Vata is blocked and this blocked Vata dosha is reversely directed (Pratilom Vayu). Due to Vata dosha dryness is increased and natural lubrication is disturbed hence causes the difficulty in breathing. Breathing becomes stressful and patient feels difficulty in natural process of breathing, and according to ayurveda treatment can be done in two major types. One type is Shaman Chikitsa in which disease causing factors (doshas) are suppressed, and the other type is Shodhan Chikitsha in which doshas are removed from the body.

Memory disorder is a state when a person finds it very difficult to store and retrieve the memory of any events or informations. When any person is affected with diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, malnutrition, consumption of alcoholism or brain injury then he might be affected with this disorder.
It can be accepted that each one of us will tend to forget few things from time to time, but it is when it occurs so frequently that it affects the daily activities it can be said that we suffer from memory disorder.
There are different types of memory disorder depending upon its intensity and it varies from a minor short term memory loss to severe Alzheimer’s disease and the patient experience so much difficulty in communicating, learning, thinking that it will totally affect their life individually/socially. Anterograde amnesia persons cannot remember the things that had happened in distant past but can very well remember the things which happened an hour ago.
In Ayurveda these states of a patient is called as smruthi nasha, the main reason is due to the depletion of the tissue elements and when the accumulated excess bio energies moves upward. Manovaha srotas channels is the carrier of impulses whose prime responsibility is memory. When the satva guna (pure and consciousness) is present then the channel is kindled in a positive way. On the other hand when tamaha (darkness of the person – passivity and ignorance) is present then it results in the malfunction of the mental activities including memory loss. Hence one should aim at increasing sattiv guna and get rid of tamasic guna which is the root cause of all mental disorders.

Ayureda – Traditional Indian Medicine

Ayurveda believes that digestive disorders occur due to inappropriate food and lifestyle. It offers a rational and scientific approach for determining correct diet which is based upon an individual’s constitution. Vata, Pitta and Kapha ( tri-dosha – energy) This energetic constitution is the basis of determining which foods are best for maintaining physiological balance for a given individual. Nutritional imbalances which leads to digestive disorders are :
** Quantitative deficiency – under nutrition due to insufficient food, and even starvation.
** Quantitative excess – excessive amounts of both health foods and even water.
** Qualitative deficiency – wrong food combination which results in malnutrition, toxic condition and lack of essential nutrients
** Qualitative excess – emotional overeating of high fat foods which can result in obesity.
** Ama-producing – certain food combinations lead to toxemia and to certain digestive disorders.
** Prakriti – foods not appropriate for one’s constitution may reduce immunity and cause disease. According to Ayurveda, every food has its own taste (rasa), a heating or cooling energy (virya) and post-digestive effect (vipaka). When two or three different food substances of different taste, energy and post-digestive effect are combined together agni can become overloaded inhibiting the enzyme system and resulting in production of toxins in the system. Combining foods improperly can result in digestive disorders like indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. For example, eating bananas with milk can diminish agni, change the intestinal flora producing toxins and may cause digestive disorders. Lack of proper and systematic lifestyle also leads to chain of reactions caused by digestive system’s inability to cope up with irregular food habits added by agonies and worries. Ayurveda manages these digestive problems through balancing the doshas with the help of food and lifestyle choices.

Digestive disorders – Yoga management

According to Ayurveda, a Science of life, the most common digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, indigestion, acidity, sluggish metabolism, diabetes, chronic tiredness can be controlled by a regular yogic practice. It believes that Agni (digestive fire) is the chief protector of the body and ama is the real cause of the diseaseYoga postures tone every area of the body including digestive system and cleanse the internal organs of toxins. It also dissolves physical stress and calms the mind thereby rejuvenating the body which leads to an improved digestion.Yoga balances all three doshas, and different poses have different effects. Forward bending postures cool Pitta dosha. Twists are good for Kapha because they stimulate digestion. Backward bends are heating, and thus balancing to Vata types, as long as the person has the strength to do them.

** One of the digestive benefits of yoga is that it restricts the blood flow to certain parts of the body while holding some poses. Once these poses are released, this area of the body is then flooded with blood and thus, oxygen. Oxygen has healing properties and is necessary for proper function of the digestive organs.

** Forward bends increase the space in the abdomen and facilitate the release of entrapped gases. These poses heat the front of the body and cool the back body.

** Regular focused breathing can also open up blocked areas of energy in the body- blocked energy, or chi, in the stomach/intestines, is often the cause of digestive problems.

** Yoga calms us, which in turn relaxes the digestive system and leads to more effective elimination.

** Several asanas like cobra, Hero, Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), Supported Supta Sukhasana, and an upright variation of Parsvottanasana (Side Stretch Pose) and Dhanurasana are practiced to treat digestive disorders. Some of these poses makes you put entire weight on stomach, thus tones stomach muscles and makes these stronger as well as to digest food better and cleanse system of left over food, etc

** The commonly used ayurvedic medicine to fight digestive disorders are Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha.

Ayurveda – Indian Healthcare
In Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of healing, wrong and irregular food habits, nervous imbalance, stressed life style, low immunity, non adherence to the natural rhythms of body and negative emotions like jealousy, anger, hatred leads to deranged agni which is the main cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.i.e, Jathara agni (digestive fire) found in the small intestine helps in breaking down the food in the smaller molecules to be digested easily. If it is weakened due to above reasons, it leads to indigestion or malabsorption or ama(toxins) and if it is strong a burning sensation can be felt.* Digestion is ruled by Jathara Agni by the support vata, pitta and kapha in its own unique manner. Any imbalance in it affects the role of that particular dosha in the digestive process and in the end affects the function of the other doshas in digestion and manifestation of IBS.Aggravation of doshas leads to deranged digestive fires i.e, Vata dosha leads to Vishama Agni, Pitta aggravation leads to Tikshna Agni and aggravated Kapha leads to Manda Agni. IBS which is categorised under Grahani, occurs due to one or more of dosha imbalance and it weakens the duodenum. According to Ayurveda, duodenum, helps in digestion and also hold it until it is properly digested and then it allows it to be passed through colon where it is excreted. Its inefficient functioning leads to either releasing its content earlier or retain the content for a longer period. So an alternating loose bowel and constipation occurs which is the main symptom IBS.Ayurveda aims at eliminating the toxins and restoration of proper digestion and it helps in bringing back the basic strength and immunity of the body thereby treating IBS in a natural way.

Obesity
Obesity is the excess amount of body fat. According to Ayurveda, there are basic elements in the human body known as the seven dhatus. These are present in human body in particular proportions and any change in their equilibrium leads to diseases. In obese persons, meda (fat) is nourished excessively, while other dhatus get malnourished and vata, kapha and pitta (doshas) in the body are out of balance as kapha is accumulated. The causes of obesity are:- Not exerting physically or mentally.- Sleeping in the afternoon.- The diet and life styles, which cause an increase in the Kapha dosha.- Consuming sweet foods.Obese persons are also prone to following:– DiabetesKidney related problemsHepatitisSkin problems Numerous tips to reduce obesity have been mentioned in Ayurveda, Some are:· Exercise like brisk walking, jogging, Yoga – asanas as well as pranayama. Physical exertion like doing housework, etc.· Mental exertion like being involved in finding solutions to problems restricts food consumption and reduce intake of calories.· Having sex frequently is also good physical output.· Consumption of honey is advisable for non-diabetic patients. Consuming two teaspoons of honey with a glass of herbal tea, which includes weight-reducing herbs, helps.· Sleeping for fewer hours, avoiding sleeping in afternoons helps to increase the burning of calories.· Avoiding food and beverages, which increase Kapha and medha, like sweets, sweetened drinks, large quantities of carbohydrates and oily food. Consuming wheat products more than rice products helps to reduce obesity.· Using Green gram and horse gram helps in reduction of Kapha and Meda. Moong, Masoor and Amla powder in one’s diet are a good means to treat obesity. And always try and drink warm water.
Ayurveda – Indian Healthcare
Obesity, which was once viewed as the result of lack of will power, or a lifestyle “choice” – the choice to overeat and under exercise, is now being considered more appropriately by the modern world as a chronic disease, which requires effective strategies for its management. In Ayurveda obesity is referred to as Sthaulya, in fact obesity is recorded as a disease in Charaka Samhita which is dated back as 1500 BC. Charaka has classified obesity as medho roga. Medas (fat) is considered to be one of the seven dhaatus (basic tissue elements that govern the body). Obese patients have been associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality relative to those with ideal body weight. Even modest weight reduction in the range of 5-10% of the initial body weight is associated with significant improvements in a wide range of co-morbid conditions.
Definition of ObesityWHO used Body mass index, which is body weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared to define obesity.
Where BMI 18.5 – 24.9 is considered as normal24.9 – 29.9 is considered as overweight29.9 – 39.9 is considered as obese andMore than 40 are considered as morbidly obese.
In Ayurveda the functions of Medas is described as “Medaha sneha swedaudhrudatwam pushtim asthyancha”The function of medas is to keep body moisturised, promote sweating, to store energy, and to nourish the bones.Typical characteristics of an obese person is described as “Medo mamsativriddhatvaachalasphigudarastanaha”There will be increase of medha and mamsa, hips, belly and breasts of obese person sag and they flap as the person move.Other symptoms mentioned in Ayurveda are the person gets tired easily, with associated wheezing, palpitation, sweating, and state of lethargy or sluggishness.
Causes of ObesityModern medicine attributes a person’s eating habits, level of physical activity, psychological disturbances, binge eating disorders, and some medications as cause of obesity apart from genetic predisposition.According to Ayurveda causes of obesity are Avyayama: ie lack of physical activity or exertion, Divaswapna: day time sleeping, Shleshmala Ahara Vihara – Food and life style which increases kapha, and Madhura Ahara: over consumption of sweets. With similar diet and exercise pattern some become obese whilst others comparably don’t according to Ayurveda this can be attributed to their prakrithis, which is their doshic nature; there are 3 basic types of doshic nature vata, pitta and kapha. Though all 3 are susceptible to develop obesity, they develop obesity in different ways. Vata people are generally nervous, anxious and overactive by nature. They tend to eat more when they are stressed, this inevitably leads to obesity. One of the distinctive marker in these people are fluctuating body weight. Pitta people very rarely become obese as they have high metabolic rate and they have good Agni ie digestive fire. But they may develop ravening appetite leading to obesity. The people with kapha are most vulnerable to become obese due to their nature, low metabolic rate, and tendancy to retain water.
Complications of obesityAccording to Ayurveda obese people are prone to diabetes, kidney related problems, low libido, skin disease, liver ailments, hepatitis, and low energy levels.
Ayurvedic TreatmentsThe treatments in Ayurveda depend on the prakrithi (nature) of the person and the vikrithi ( pathology) of the disease. Some herbs used in ObesityGinger (Adraka), bitter gourd (Karela), Gooseberry (Amlaki), Nut grass (Musta), false pepper(vidanga) , Belleric Myroblan (Bibhitaki), Tinospora Gulancha(Guluchi), Chebulic Myroblan (Haritaki) to name a few.
Certain Ayurvedic preparations like Trikatu, Guggulu, Shilajit, Thriphala Guggulu, Amrutaday Guggulu, Arogya Vardhini, Chandraprabha Vati, Varadi Kashayam, Ayaskriti, Lohabhasmam, Vilangadi Choornam can be used with good efficacy.Fasting in considered beneficial but care must be taken to avoid fruit juices while fasting; replacing this with vegetable juice will be advantageous.
Taking honey with equal quantity of hot water is also advisable.
Udvartana: This is a specialized Ayurvedic herbal massage treatment for effective weight reduction. An herbal powder prescribed by the physician is applied all over the body and deeply massaged with specific movements. Apart from weight reduction this also helps to remove cellulite and toxins from the body, and tones the skin & muscles. It is prudent to lead a hard life, strain oneself, do exercise, avoid rich food, and get regular bowel movements.Though these are all treatment aspects the most important thing to remember is to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.
